Welcome to Bogey Free Life
Nothing beats a clean scorecard.
18 holes. No squares on the card.
There’s a sense of satisfaction that comes with a round of golf with no blemishes. No matter your skill level, there’s always that one errant shot, that one questionable decision, that one putt that JUST misses, that can end the dream.
Can one bring the ideal to not have a single screw up into their life?
Probably. Maybe. I don’t know.
A round of golf has 18 holes. Average 4 shots a hole, that’s 72 chances to mess up a perfect round. (Yes, I know how often a par can feel like a colossal blunder, but we’re talking averages here, people.)
Look at an average day. Up at 6, down at 10 -- give or take – and you’ve got 16 hours, each with countless decisions, choices, and opportunities to screw things up. How common is it for someone to make every perfect choice for an entire day? Now stretch that day out to a week. To a month. To a year.
To a life?
I’m not saying this is an obtainable goal, I’m just saying that it’s something to strive for.
Along the way, I’m going to figure out tools I can utilize to help me get this done. This site itself, is one of those tools. It’s a way to hold myself accountable, to put some work in, and to exercise the writing muscle that I’ve let atrophy over time.
This site started with my idea for the Vanity Handicap Project. I just wanted to shave pounds off my body and shave strokes off my golf game. That’s still the goal. But in documenting that, I want to find myself more present with all aspects of my daily life.
How to better myself. Limit the mental and physical errors that could possibly occur countless times a day.
The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to be better.
They can’t all be birdies. But they don’t have to be bogies, either.
